Video Investigating food and fibres: producer video

TLF ID M019351

This is a video about biodynamic grape growing and wine production at Cape Jaffa Winery in South Australia. It is narrated by co-owner and winemaker Anna Hooper, who describes the wine regions in which the vineyard is located, its soil types, and the main wines grown. She goes on to illustrate the winery's commitment to the biodynamic philosophy of the farm as a closed system and its production techniques that include using ducks, geese and chickens instead of harmful pesticides and making and mixing 500, a cow manure based compost. The video lasts for 4:12 min and in the latter part Hooper describes the timing of the harvest and her personal satisfaction that some of the wine is available overseas. She shows the different fermentation and wine-making techniques for red and white wines and how much of the wine is marketed through cellar door sales.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is an excellent resource for studies of wine production in relation to the upper primary and secondary curriculums in Design and Technologies and Economics and Business and the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority. In the Design and Technologies curriculum the video's description of biodynamic production is of considerable value for the years 5/6 content descriptions about how people in Design and Technologies occupations (such as viticulturists) address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products and environments and about how and why food is produced in managed environments. It is also of value for the years 7/8 content description about how food is produced in managed environments and how these become more sustainable.
  • In Economics and Business the video segments about quality not quantity and how the wine is marketed support the year 6 content description about the reasons businesses exist and the different ways they provide goods and services and the year 8 content description about the types of businesses and the ways that businesses respond to opportunities in Australia.
  • The resource is also of considerable value for the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority. Cape Jaffa Winery's commitment to biodynamics is especially relevant to the organising idea that sustainable patterns of living rely on the interdependence of healthy social, economic and ecological systems. The 25 ha vineyard was certified as fully biodynamic in 2008.
